Do you want to become an expert in the integration of technology, people, and company processes? Are you interested in being able to recognize interactive company roles and become adept at making advantageous business decisions? Global Industrial Management adds value to you in whatever business role or industry you decide to call your own, by training you to adapt to rapid organizational changes. You will study all functions of an organization, allowing you to understand the business cycle, which is necessary in this ever-changing economy.

Jim Smith

President of Anorad

One former student, Jim Smith, graduated from the Global Industrial Management Masters Program in 2000. He is the successful president of Anorad, a global division of Rockwell Automation and a leader in industrial automation. When asked how the program had helped with the success of his business, his comments were, " I have described the program as expertise in just about every area of a typical engineering/manufacturing business. As the head of this multinational business it is imperative that I have more than a minim um of knowledge in each functional area. Optimum decisions come from having accurate data and the correct understanding of the interactions in a business to apply the data to solve the problem. Too often I see decision makers with lots of data and no interactive understanding of the roles of various groups in a company. Data is easy to come by, determining the accuracy, context and applicability of this data is essential to optimum organizational decisions."

Jim spoke about how the Global Industrial Management degree improved the way he did business, "It wasn't just the degree by itself, it is the associated confidence, associated Stony Brook university relationships, associated business relationships, the raw skills learned, and the knowledge assimilated. It's the whole picture completed. I have at least one contact a month with former professors or other Stony Brook University academics and administrators which measurably help our business every day. We currently have 2 intern students on staff, at least one major Materials research program ongoing and a host of shorter projects in conjunction with Stony Brook University. This is leverage of fantastic resources and capabilities that 99% of the companies simply could not afford to carry on their payrolls full time. I have similar positive relationships with a wide variety of former classmates."

Jim recommends the Global Industrial Management Program because, "the shear variety and diversity of learning experiences and styles requires an individual to continually flex and accommodate. This ability to dynamically alter one's reference point is exactly what is fundamental to business success. Business is really about rapid adaption to changing circumstances. I felt this program has such a wide variety of topics, teaching styles, and course materials that success in this program demonstrates more than technical learning abilities, but an adaption to a much larger variety of methods and styles than in any singular disciplinary Masters curriculum."

Professor Ted Teng

Director of Technology Learning Center Society

Ted Teng teaches a variety of subjects in the Department of Technology & Society. He is also the Director of Technology Learning Center Society in College Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS).

A couple of weeks ago I had the opportunity to interview him in regard to the GIM program. This is what he had to say:

How many overseas students are taking this course?

Started in Feb. 05: 22 students are enrolled in Taiwan.
Beginning in June 05: Students are going to enrolled in Shenzhen, China.
Beginning in Sept. 05: Two classes are going to be held in Taiwan in Shenzhen RCTS GIM and Korea Ajou EC.

How many students are taking the class?

There are seventy students taking the class in Stony Brook University and twenty students taking it in Taiwan.

What is the name of Masters Program?

It is called the Master of Science in Technological System Management with a Concentration in Global Industrial Management.

When asked to describe the Global Industrial Management program, Professor Schiller had this to say, "It is the understanding of
people, processes, and technologies, and how to integrate them. If
you want to be a successful manager of almost anything, our program
provides you with the knowledge to fully understand all the functions
of an organization, and how each function contributes to the entire
business cycle of delivering goods and services."

Do I need a car?

A car makes living at Stony Brook much more convenient. However, it is not necessary. The Long Island Railroad Station is located right on campus and a free bus system runs around campus. Also, there is a free bus that takes students to off-campus locations such as the grocery store (Waldbaums), the bookstore (Borders), the Smithhaven mall, the movie theater, etc.

What kind of recreation is available on campus?

The Department of Campus Recreation coordinations many programs including intramural sports, clubs, open recreation, wellness programs, and special events. Events vary from flag football to basketball to white water rafting to Texas Hold 'Em poker tournaments. All Stony Brook students can use the gyms, workout facilities, and pool for free. Where will I live?
Stony Brook University offers on-campus housing for graduate students. The housing accomodates singles, couples, and families. The apartments all have cable television and most apartments have ethernet connections
